There were two things that I was trying to capture in this portrait: (1) the truly epic proportions of Matt’s bed head, and (2) his facial expression – which combines a sleepy acquiescence to it, and the laissez-faire, self-deprecating seriousness with which he stands there, displaying it in all its glory. Is it any coincidence that this is my favorite painting so far, and it’s the one I’ve had the most fun in painting? I think not.

Art writer Paul Gardner wrote “A painting is never finished, it simply stops in interesting places.” Oscar should have been finished a couple of weeks ago, but I kept touching it. Now it’s worse. I’m stopping here, in these interesting places.
I had to add hair. And glasses (since that’s how most people see me). I usually have an unruly mess of random hair strands falling out of my hat to the side, so I just went with that. Another one down. Yea.
I figured this painting would either work up really fast, or I’d spend an eternity on little details that are completely unnecessary (that would be the normal way I paint). Thankfully, the former seems to be the case, and I’m just having fun with this. Now, to finish the white, is all…
