For someone who says she doesn’t paint the standard ‘head shot’ types of portraits, I certainly have done a few. Sometimes I take the commission, but just don’t post it here; as it’s not the type of work that represents what I do. And yet, it does. Sure, my paintings are usually animated or goofy orContinue reading “Shadows & Light (Rummy)”

Brody, almost done
Sometimes, I spend way too much time on a painting. Brody (36 x 36″) is almost done, but I still need to add a ton of white muzzle hairs and then the black whiskers. I’m letting it dry for a bit while I start Barney…
Skadi, done
I think Skadi is done. I’d left it for quite a while to allow the initial layers to dry. I had never painted on board before, and found it extremely challenging. For me, board (even gessoed) is too slippery for oils, and I thought that the underpainting would allow subsequent layers to grip;Continue reading “Skadi, done”
Intermittent Reinforcers
Like most of us, I have a love/hate relationship with Facebook. While it has always been obvious that the user is the product on a free social media platform, Zuckerberg’s despicable brand of greedy exploitation of others to serve his own self-interest has its own strain of wanton deceit (obvious to anyone who listened toContinue reading “Intermittent Reinforcers”
Furbo, done
Furbo is done. It’s a departure from my usual composition, but I do like how his personality is captured, here. I am always grateful for commissions where the humans’ vision for the painting is more about the dog’s personality than facial features! 24 x 36″
The Side Eye, on the Easel
A bit of a departure from my usual type of subject, but her expression made me laugh. Sometimes with commissions, it takes a while to find (or take) just the right photo; but not so, with Lucy. The side-eye is an expression that she is known and loved for. Just need to do all thatContinue reading “The Side Eye, on the Easel”
On Vulnerability
Last week, I attended a conversation between Krista Tippett (many know her from NPR’s On Being) and poet David Whyte which centered around the theme of vulnerability. With Tippett’s recent Civil Conversations project, vulnerability was approached more as an experience of engaging in political discussions with those whose choice we don’t understand, but the wordContinue reading “On Vulnerability”
Baxter, sketch
Once a painting of Baxter was commissioned, I started following his goofy and lovable expressions online, to get a better feel for his personality. A true snow dog, he is happiest when surrounded by the white stuff, and this painting will show him in his true glory, snow capping his head and muzzle. Now that the basic outline isContinue reading “Baxter, sketch”
Newman, done
One of the things I love most about painting time in the studio is the aural input. I’m a podcast person because it offers an endless supply of options for someone with many different — OK, scattered — interests, allowing my brain to receive all kinds of information while my eyes and hands are busy withContinue reading “Newman, done”
Tory, on the Easel
I have a queue of dog paintings that will keep me busy through the summer, so I’m taking a little break to get some human faces done. Tory is 36 x 48″ and this is whipping up somewhat quickly — to my surprise. I was in the studio over the weekend for hours, mostly putzingContinue reading “Tory, on the Easel”
